The Point
Don’t Look Up
My name is Adam and I am twenty-seven years old.
I haven’t told anyone what happened to me last week because I know exactly how this story will sound when I say it out loud.
But there is one thing I want to say before I begin.
If you’re walking through a place you know well and suddenly every sound around you disappears don’t try to find out why.
Keep walking.
And don’t look up.
It started years ago when I was seventeen.
I lived with my family in a quiet neighborhood on the edge of the city. About a ten-minute walk behind our house there was a large empty piece of land that people called “The Old Basin.”
Years ago there had been plans to build a huge water reservoir there but the project was abandoned and the land was left empty.
The grass grew tall in winter and turned dry in summer. In the middle of the field stood an old communications tower. I never knew if it still worked.
I passed that place almost every morning on my way to school.
One morning in November I saw the first strange thing.
An old man was standing near the tower.
At first I didn’t care.
But after walking a few more steps I noticed that he was standing in a strange way.
His back was straight.
His arms were hanging at his sides.
And his head was tilted upward.
I looked at the sky to see what he was watching.
There was nothing there.
No plane. No birds. Not even clouds.
I kept walking.
About twenty minutes later my bus arrived.
Before getting on I looked back.
The man was still there.
In exactly the same position.
Several months passed before I saw anything strange again.
This time I was walking home in the evening.
There was a flock of sheep in the field and a shepherd sitting near the road.
As I walked past I heard something strange.
It wasn’t loud.
It was more like a deep vibration that you felt inside your chest rather than heard with your ears.
I stopped.
A few seconds later one of the sheep raised its head.
Then another.
Then another.
Within less than ten seconds the entire flock was standing completely still.
Every head was raised toward the same place above the tower.
The shepherd started shouting and hitting the ground with his stick.
None of them reacted.
Then something happened that made me back away from the place.
Every sheep took one step forward at exactly the same time.
Then another.
It looked like someone was controlling them.
The shepherd grabbed one of them and tried pulling it back but the animal fought him in a way I had never seen before.
It wasn’t trying to escape from him.
It was trying to reach the tower.
I ran home and told no one.
After that I started noticing details I had never paid attention to before.
The grass closest to the tower didn’t grow straight upward.
It bent toward it.
Even when the wind was blowing in the opposite direction.
Some mornings I found dozens of dead insects along the road surrounding the field.
But the strangest thing was the birds.
They never landed on the tower.
They circled around it.
One huge circle.
Always in the same direction.
Then everything suddenly stopped.
I went to college and moved to another city. As the years passed I convinced myself that I had exaggerated everything in my head.
Until last week.
I returned to my parents’ house for a few days.
On the second night I woke up at around three in the morning.
I didn’t know what had woken me.
The room was completely dark.
Then I noticed something.
I couldn’t hear anything.
And I don’t mean the house was quiet.
I mean there was absolutely no sound.
No cars.
No dogs.
No wind.
Even the small fan beside my bed was spinning in front of me but I couldn’t hear it.
I sat up in bed.
That’s when I heard my mother calling me.
“Adam.”
The voice came from outside.
I froze.
My parents’ bedroom was at the end of the hallway.
Before going to sleep I had watched my mother walk into that room.
Then I heard her voice again.
“Adam. Come quickly.”
I walked toward the window.
From the second floor I could see the Old Basin.
In the middle of the field beneath the tower there was a woman.
Even from that distance I recognized her.
It was my mother.
She was wearing the same nightgown I had seen her wearing only hours earlier.
She was standing with her back toward me.
I immediately opened my bedroom door.
I ran to my parents’ room.
My mother was asleep beside my father.
I went back to the window.
The woman was still there.
But now she was facing the house.
I couldn’t see her face in the darkness.
Then she slowly raised one hand.
And pointed toward the sky above her.
I don’t know why but suddenly I felt an overwhelming urge to look.
It wasn’t curiosity.
My body itself wanted to raise my head.
I covered my face with my hands and closed my eyes.
Then I heard my mother’s voice again.
But this time the voice wasn’t coming from the field.
It was very close to the window.
“Adam… look.”
I stayed on the floor with my hands pressed against my ears.
I don’t know how much time passed.
A minute?
An hour?
Eventually I heard a car driving down the street.
Then the sound of the fan returned.
Dogs started barking somewhere in the distance.
I opened my eyes.
There was nobody outside.
The next morning I went to check the place from the road.
I didn’t enter the field.
What I saw made me decide that I would never return to that neighborhood again.
There were dozens of birds around the tower.
They weren’t dead.
They were standing on the ground in a perfect circle.
Completely still.
Every single one of them was looking up.
I was about to leave when I noticed a man standing among them.
An old man.
His arms were hanging at his sides.
His head was tilted toward the sky.
It took me a few seconds to recognize him.
He was the same man I had seen when I was seventeen.
He barely looked any older.
I walked away without looking at the sky.
But since that night something new has started happening.
Every time I turn off the lights before going to sleep I feel that faint vibration inside my chest.
And last night I heard a voice coming from the ceiling of my apartment.
It was my own voice.
And it said only one thing.
“This time… look up.”
