Ridouan Taghi: Dutch Crime Boss Story

Ridouan Taghi Marengo trial Dubai arrest life sentence

For years, Ridouan Taghi seemed to exist just beyond the reach of the law.

Dutch investigators linked him to an international cocaine-trafficking network and a series of violent crimes. His name appeared in one of the Netherlands’ most significant organized-crime investigations, while witnesses, lawyers, journalists, and prosecutors faced extraordinary security threats.

Then, in December 2019, the fugitive was arrested in Dubai.

His capture did not end the story. It opened the door to the Marengo trial, a landmark Dutch criminal case that lasted for years and ended on February 27, 2024, when Taghi was sentenced to life in prison.

Who Is Ridouan Taghi?

Ridouan Taghi is a Dutch-Moroccan organized-crime figure who became associated with the criminal networks often described in the media as the “Mocro Maffia.” The phrase is commonly used for rival groups involved in drug trafficking and violence in the Netherlands and Belgium. However, it does not necessarily describe one formal organization controlled by a single leader.

The 2019 Arrest in Dubai

By the time Dubai police arrested Taghi in December 2019, he had become one of the Netherlands’ most wanted fugitives. The arrest followed an international search and cooperation between authorities. Taghi was later extradited to the Netherlands, where he was placed in a high-security prison while the criminal case moved forward.

What Was the Marengo Trial?

The Marengo case examined a series of murders and attempted murders that prosecutors said were connected to an organized criminal network. Taghi was the main defendant.

The trial was unusually difficult and dangerous. The murder of the brother of the protected witness in 2018 shocked the Netherlands. In 2019, lawyer Derk Wiersum, who represented the witness, was murdered outside his home. In 2021, journalist and television personality Peter R. de Vries was shot after publicly supporting the witness.

The 2024 Verdict

On February 27, 2024, the Amsterdam District Court sentenced Ridouan Taghi to life imprisonment in the Marengo case. Two other defendants also received life sentences. Other participants received prison terms
